Background of the Study
The rapid expansion of mobile technology has given rise to a distinctive form of communication among Nigerian youth: text messaging slang. This study explores morphosyntactic trends in youth communication by analyzing the structure and formation of language in SMS exchanges. Nigerian text messaging often features creative abbreviations, non-standard syntax, and innovative morphological constructions, reflecting both global digital trends and localized cultural influences (Okeke, 2023). Youth slang in text messages is characterized by a simplified morphosyntax that deviates from formal language norms, facilitating rapid and efficient communication. The study utilizes corpus analysis and qualitative interviews to document these morphosyntactic features and trace their evolution over time. It examines how these trends influence language perception and identity among young Nigerians, and whether such digital vernaculars affect formal writing skills (Afolabi, 2024). Findings are expected to contribute to the understanding of digital language evolution and inform educational strategies that bridge informal and formal communication practices (Chinonso, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of text messaging slang among Nigerian youth, research on its morphosyntactic trends is limited. Existing studies have largely focused on lexical innovations, neglecting the structural changes in morphology and syntax that characterize digital communication (Okeke, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how informal language practices influence overall language development and identity formation. Without systematic investigation, educators and language policymakers lack the insights needed to address potential negative effects on formal language proficiency. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the morphosyntactic features of Nigerian text messaging slang, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of digital language trends (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document morphosyntactic features in Nigerian text messaging slang.
  2. To analyze trends and patterns in digital language use.
  3. To assess the implications for formal language education.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic characteristics define Nigerian text messaging slang?
  2. How do these trends evolve over time?
  3. What impact do they have on formal language skills?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of morphosyntactic trends in Nigerian youth communication, contributing to our understanding of digital language evolution. The findings will benefit educators, linguists, and policymakers by informing strategies to balance informal digital practices with formal language proficiency (Okeke, 2023; Chinonso, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of text messaging slang among Nigerian youth.

Definitions of Terms
